Pitmedden Garden
Brilliant design and meticulous maintenance give Pitmedden Garden its unique charm. In late 2018, and with thanks to a generous private supporter, a plan was made to explore an innovative ‘rethink’ of the formal parterre design. The historical importance of the garden was carefully reviewed to ensure that any reworking justifiably enhanced the current garden, and Chris Beardshaw, the designer, placed an increased emphasis on the narratives of ‘future gardening style’, biodiversity and responsible resource management.
With almost 6 miles of clipped box hedging in intricate patterns, the parterres are a masterpiece at the heart of the garden.
Dating back to 1675 it was originally laid out by Sir Alexander Seton until the Trust re-created the garden in the 1950s.
Planted on such an extravagant scale – Pitmedden is a garden of awe and definitely worth a visit.
